Girls Who Bite Back: Witches, Mutants, Slayers and Freaks
www.girlswhobiteback.com/

My short story "The Smile on the Face" just came out in Emily Pohl-Weary's new anthology (title in the header). It's an anthology that takes on those modern fairy tales: superhero women in pop culture. Here's from the blurb:

"Taking on the bombshell spies, slayers, witches and assassins who are fighting their way into movies and television shows everywhere, Girls Who Bite Back examines what these new role models for young women are really about.

"Emily Pohl-Weary, co-author with Judith Merril of the Hugo Award-winning Better to Have Loved: The Life of Judith Merril, puts her unique stamp on the field of speculative
fiction and pop culture in this one-of-a-kind anthology of short fiction, cultural analysis, comics and original artwork.

"Girls Who Bite Back cuts through the layers of the new ?female power,? questioning its corporate origins and investigating issues of race and sexual orientation. And the book goes a crucial step further by asking: If you don?t like what?s out there now, what do you want to see?

"In response, writers like Hiromi Goto (The Kappa Child, Chorus of Mushrooms), Nalo Hopkinson (Brown Girl in the Ring, The Salt Roads), Larissa Lai (Salt Fish Girl, When Fox
Is a Thousand), Nikki Stafford (Bite Me! An Unofficial Guide to the World of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, How Xena Changed Our Lives), Mariko Tamaki (True Lies: The Book of
Bad Advice, Cover Me) and more chronicle the best and the worst supergirls, envision new role models and create a do-it-yourself guide to being a superhero.

"Talented artists, including Shary Boyle, Eliza Griffiths, Sonja Ahlers, Sheila Butler, Marc Ngui and Matthew Blackett, imagine stronger, more intelligent superheroines and explore the ugly side of girls who fight back. (And check out the actual recipe for action ...)

This is a terrific book (I only wish I could have written an essay for it myself), and I *loved* your story in it, Nalo. I hope the book does really well!

Re: Girls Who Bite Back: Witches, Mutants, Slayers and Freak
Thanks, Terri. The first time (as an adult) I tried to write fiction, I wanted to do something with the story of Margaret of Antioch. That first attempt wasn't that hot. Took a few tries, but I finally got her into a story, if only sideways. i hope that the anthology does well too. i love the work that Emily Pohl-Weary is doing.
