Cinderella on Radio 4
For those of you who live in the U.K., "Women's Hour" on Radio 4 is putting together a show on the history of Cinderella, the changes to the tale over the centuries, and the way the tale affects women and girls today. Quite an interesting subject. They aim to air the program sometime before Christmas. When I have an exact date and time, I'll post it here.

I know about the program because I was being considered as one of the commentators, which would have been worth the long slog from Devon into London--the history of women and fairy tales being my passion (and one I share, I know, with many of you on this board). But I learned today that they've decided that they can't hire me because of my American accent. Being too genre-identified and too feminist didn't faze them (the usual stumbling blocks for this sort of gig), but being too American did. < rolling of eyes > What can you do but laugh?

Anyway, I'll post the date when I've got it. The producer sounds smart and interesting, and it's likely to be a good show.

By the way, a belated "thank you" to everyone who responded, on the board and by email, to my request this summer for recommendations of Portugese fairy tales. I passed them on to my friend who was searching for a tale that might work as a children's play -- and he found one, called The Big Fish, in one of the suggested books. He's in rehearsals for the play in Portugal now, and the show opens in two weeks.

Non UK listeners can listen to BBC programming through the internet: www.bbc.co.uk/radio/

I listen to BBC7 & BBC4 at home all the time, and you usually have a week after the air date to listen.
