This may seem obvious, but what about Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series? More specifically, the Harper Hall series: Menolly of Dragonsong is rescued/befriended by a thread-fighting dragon, an event that propells her toward her own destiny as a harper.

Not thinking of folklore at the moment, but in the vein of novels in the theme, one of my favorites with the girl befriending the dragon is Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles , especially the first one, Dealing With Dragons.

The Twin Brothers is one of the few folk tales that actually mentions a dragon, but that one kidnaps the girl (and is most likely the source of the dragon/princess myth).

There's also a vintage forum thread about dragons at

Again, not a folktale, but still might be of interest. Amy Unregistered Userbounded, a wonderful graphic novel by Rachel Hartman, includes a friendship between a young girl and a dragon. A bound collection of some of it, Amy Unregistered Userbounded: Belondweg Blossoming, is available at many online bookstores and some real-world comic stores. It's sweet without being cloying, funny, and genuine. I recommend it highly!

Jeff Smith's comic book series, Bone, includes the relationship between the girl Thorn and her protector, the Red Dragon.

Yeah. There is book called Dragon Bait. I haven't read it yet but i'm getting to it so i can't really tell you if the book is good. But i've read other books by the author so i should say it would be pretty good.

Ahem
My Pit Dragon books has a very active girl named Akki who, with her friend Jakkin, works at a dragon nursery where dragons are bred and raised.
