Urban / Modern Fairy Tales
I'm interested in modern fairy tales, ones that have developed in our urban metropolises. I found the links in the archive on this site to the Miami / homeless kids article which I found to be fascinating.

Does anyone know of any resources, articles, books on modern urban legends? Are there any stories that are city-specific, ie.e. "only in New York"? Now I'm not talking about urban legends where a guy wakes up in a tub of ice with his kidneys removed or the kind they test in the "Mythbusters" show on the Discovery channel (which is a great show); I guess I'm looking for more actual stories.

Although it tends more to urban legends, snopes.com is still a great place to start on your quest.

Re: Urban / Modern Fairy Tales
Wow, haven't been here in a while. Glad it's all still up and running!

Anyway, I would try Endicott Studios website, especially their links page. Lots of connections to those who write urban fantasy, like Terri Windling, Charles DeLint, etc. Also, ever since J.K. Rowling blew the doors off the cross-over YA market, Young Adult fiction is swimming with great urban fantasy, much of it more revolutionary and interesting than anything going on in the stagnating adult SF and Fantasy genre. Holly Black has written two very good books, one is called Tithe, the other Valiant, the latter of which is a gritty, New York faery story about runaways. Another good book is Faerie Wars and the Purple Emporer, by Herbie Brennan. Anything by DeLint is great, and the Borderlands (by Windling and others) series was groundbreaking. Might only find those on ebay or Amazon at this point, but worth tracking down. Anyway, that's a start, I suppose. Good luck.

Re: Urban / Modern Fairy Tales
There is one Borderlands anthology of short stories still in print. Also there are some novels by Emma Bull and William Shetterly that take place in the "Borderlands" that are still in print, Finder, NeverNever and I think it's called Elsewhere. I loudly second the recommendations for Holly Black.

Re: Urban / Modern Fairy Tales
Right - another great novel by Emma Bull is "War For The Oaks," which keeps getting reprinted all the time. In this day and age, for a SF or fantasy novel, that says something.

Here's a Contemporary Fantasy reading list, which includes a lot of urban fantasy: www.endicott-studio.com/lists/list-contemporary.html

Re: Urban Fairies
I just read a fascinating article on the fabulization of a mannequin in a Mexican city. (I don't think fabulization is a real word but go with me here.) After seeing how realisitc the mannequin looked stories began surrounding the figure...she is the embalmed daughter of the shopowner, she performs miracles, wakes up at night, etc.

It's not quite like the stories the children created in Miami, but I think it is a fascinating story nonetheless about people believing in magic in an urban setting about a particularly modern item.
