Favorite protagonist of fairytale
Just curious but what is Your favorite protagonist of the realm of Imagination?

Mine is Beauty from beauty and The beast or Pysche from Cupid and Pysche.

Oh and I like Odette from Swan Lake too. Though that isn't a fairytale , is it?

The winds are blowing and the story soon is growing

Re: Favorite protagonist of fairytale
The one that immediately pops into my head is the nameless girl from East of the Sun and West of the Moon, but I have this nagging feeling that I'm forgetting someone . . .
Anyway, I like that girl because she may have made a foolish decision, but she more than made up for it by working so hard to rescue her prince. Plus I just love the lyrical rhythm of the tale: "Can you tell me how to get to the castle East of the Sun and West of the Moon, where lives the prince who is to marry the troll princess with a nose three yards long?"

Re: Favorite protagonist of fairytale
Mine is Donkeyskin. She inspired me to continue trying, no matter how dreadful my life was. I used to think " If only I could be like her and hide under a cloak of unrecognizability, then maybe I could be safe." Of course, hiding only helped a little, but she survived. And got the good man in the end. As did I.;)

Re: Favorite protagonist of fairytale
Scheherezade--she single-handedly stops a misogynist's senseless slaughter of women by weaving hundreds of tales while under the threat of execution, every single night, even during the pregnancy and birth of several children.

Best,
Alice

Re: Favorite protagonist of fairytale
Kate Crackernuts--doesn't bother her a whit that her stepsister is especially lovely and she isn't, in spite of her mother's views, and she is able to save her sister AND a prince. Of course tomorrow or next week my favorite could be the Goose Girl, who could command the wind, or the girl from The Three Spinners who won't spin, or Puss (the one with the boots).

You might find these past discussions interesting:

If you were a fairy tale character tale, who would you be?

Absolute favorite...

What fairy tale character are you most like?

Re: thx
Tatterhood I think. She was similar to Kate Crackernuts, but it was her real sister she saved.

favorites
Molly Whuppie for being such a trickster and the fearless youngest. Vasilisa the Wise...for being so smart. And the Monkey Girl (from the Kordofan tale the Monkey Girl) for being clever, wise and oh so fantastic.

Re: favorites
I was also going to say Molly Whuppie and Vasilisa the Wise, as well as Janet of "Tam Lin", and the sister in "Little Sister, Little Brother".

Forgive my ignorance but who is Vasilissa the Wise and what tale does she come from?

Is this a russian folktale as the Name Indicates?

Vasilisa the Wise
Vasilisa the Wise is a Russian folktale. She is one of those beastly brides (this time she appares in the guise of a frog) but is really a beautiful and fantastic bride. There's lots of quickie versions of it on the internet...

here for example.

Favorite Protagonist of Fairytale
My favorite fairytale protagonist as a child was Gerda in The Snow Queen, I suppose because of all her adventures as she looked for her friend Kai and because the grandmother/old women/robber girl's mother all reminded me of my grandmother who lived with us. Now my favorite is Vasilisa the Brave [different tale from the one Midori mentioned], though actually I like the witch Baba Yaga even MORE. And just wrote a chapter on 'the Old Woman in fairytales' for my next book, on aging.

What's sort of creepy, though, is that as a child I also identified strongly with The Little Match Girl. I was horrified when I went back and read that tale again a few years ago since she freezes to death!

(I liked her too but I wanted happy endings, I never liked andersen tales very much except for the wild swans,)

The second wife...
I love the Celtic version of Snow White with the second wife who outsmarts and kills the queen. I think it is wonderful that she is the hero.
