large victorian dolls, for bereaved parents??
hi there

this may not fit in to this site but i don't know where else to look.

I heard from a friend that the large Victorian dolls were not toys but in fact were given as gifts to parents that had lost a child. Does anyone know if this is true and where i could find any references?

Mourning Dolls
Spoke too soon. There are a number of sites that make reference to mourning dolls, which were used by a variety of cultures. (In this case, the Mohegans.) Just couldn’t find a specific reference to the Victorians. Wouldn’t be surprised to learn they used mourning dolls though, given their funeral practices.
There are several national doll collector guilds. They could probably help you out. Or, try one of the funeral museums.

Re: Mourning Dolls
Wow, it's weird that this came up right now, because I just read an article on yahoo about how Japanese toy manufacturers are making talking dolls for lonely elderly people who live alone. It's kind of sad- one lady said she was raising it like her kid, and other people have been troubled because they can't answer the doll when it asks something like "Why do elephants have long noses?"

Doll mothers
I've never heard of that, but it syncs oddly with Vasilisa the Fair and the spirit of the mother residing in a helpful doll, doesn't it?

Re: Doll mothers
Lynn Flewelling's deliciously creepy novel THE BONE DOLL'S TWIN deals with elements of this (the main character carries a doll inhabited by the spirit of her twin brother, killed at birth). Wonderful dark fantasy.
