IS the Phantom of the Opera....
Is the Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux related to Edgar Allen Poe?

Yes I know not related to fairytales but I know you all are Literary proficient. And all Of you know so very very much on any subject it seems.

The two novels seem to be related becasue the Phantom dresses up as the Red death at the masque Ball
and The Professor valerius dies of tuberculosis as does the father of christine daee.

Also the Phantom is a living corpse and he sleeps in a coffin. These all seem to me to be related to Poe.

*note; the Phantom is published 1911, Poe dies in 183-
(sorry cant remeber date)

Re: IS the Phantom of the Opera....
I'm not sure about the tuberculosis---TB has been a literary convention for some time, I think, very convenient for killing off characters---but I believe the Phantom's costume is a direct reference to Poe's story.

Re: IS the Phantom of the Opera....
Is this in any way related to Andrew Lloyd Weber's PotO?Because I saw the film with Gerard Butler(love it,and I went in cold)and I can't remember the Phantom sleeping in a coffin.It was a scallop-shaped bed,like a clam,if I remember right.

But I have to agree TB could just be a coincidence.Very useful, very easy, especially since it was so common - makes it believiable.

the phantoms coffin
Yes the pahntom did sleep in a coffin, in the novel.

Was the movie good? I am still sort of awed by the trailers.

I had nightmares about th Phantom when I was a child becasue of the creepy '800 Phantom by phone' radio comercials. To actually See the pahtom might help me conquer the fear though I hope.

Phantom was quite good
I enjoyed it very much. Gerard Butler actually did his own singing, and while he is no Michael Crawford, he did fairly well. Besides, he was lovely to look at.

The sets were fabulous!

Re: Phantom was quite good
I must agree - this is an incredible visual movie - gorgeous and lush. Minnie Driver was enjoyably over-the-top as Carlotta. Emmy Rossom was pretty amazing and luminous as Christine given that she was 16 years old when they filmed it. Gerard Butler doesn't sing by Broadway standards (I understand he fronted a rock band in college - for fun) - but he was magnetic enough to watch that I didn't care what he sounded like after a few minutes. :-) If you don't mind that the story doesn't really hold together on almost any level - you can still quite enjoy the spectacle, music and amazing sets. The opening sequence where the chandelier lights up and is pulled to the ceiling, transforming the opera house, is practically worth the price of admission alone.
