Japanese Fairy Tales
I am looking for a book that my second grade teacher used to read to us (that would have been in the mid 60s). As I recall it was Japanese Fairy Tales, though it could have been more generically Asian. The one story that I recall had a monster that cried blood and his tears turned into ruby's. The illustrations were beautiful. I currently work in a museum store and our museum is having an exhibit of fairy tales. I would like to bring in as many DIFFERENT fairy tale books as possible and this is one that I would like to find. Any leads would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rebecca

Re: Japanese Fairy Tales
I know of one book that contains the story/legend you mentioned, though I have no way to be sure it's the same book you're thinking of. I'm away from my library at the moment. If no one else comes up with it before tonight I'll get it for you.

Ok, this might be it, though I'm sure there's more than one book collecting this legend:

MYTHS AND LEGENDS OF JAPAN by F. Hadland Davis. I have the Dover edition from 1992, but the first edition was published in London in 1913, so it's been around awhile. The legend of the creature that cried jewels was from "The Jewel-tears of Same'bito", p 376-379.

The illustrations are indeed gorgeous, and were done by an artist named Evelyn Paul.

Thanks, Richard. The Dover edition is still in print, too.

I'm rather fond of that book. It also contains "The Peony Lantern," which is one of my favorite ghost stories. Supposedly from the Edo period, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's even earlier. I finally had to do my own version of that one.

Re: Japanese Fairy Tales
Oh I've read that story, The Peony Lantern, as well. There are some great Japanese ghost stories. Since summer is the traditional time to share ghost stories in Japan, I think I will have to find and reread the story and share it with my friend who is leaving for Japan this month.
