Display in 2006 of Fairy Tale Artifacts

I am a former children's librarian and have collected
children's books for many years. My favorite illustrator
is Trina Schart Hyman. (How sad to have lost such
a wonderful illustrator last year, but she now lives on in her books.)

My question, I am looking for ideas for a display I
will have next Spring at a small local library. I am creating
faux "artifacts" belolnging to fairy tale characters to
display as if they were "real". For example, I bought a
pair of very old tapestry shoes at a local junk shop
and have "morphed" them into shoes belonging to
Rapunzel. They are lined with old brown sheep wool,
old engraved illustrations are on the insoles and
wool spinnings are the shoe's ties. I am accumulating
other "artifacts" from here and there. Old Mother Hubbard's
broom as another example. Can anyone on this posting
forum offer any ideas for me? I am open to any
suggestions where a character's "personal effects"could become part of this display.

These ideas could be from a children's fairy tale,
folk tale, fiction book or poetry book

Ooooh, yes, what a fun idea! A magic mirror, of course, belonging to Snow White's stepmother. Perhaps a pile of ashes from Cinderella's hearth? Or the rags she wore before becoming a queen. If we're going for brooms, I would say the famous broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West, which Dorothy had to bring to the Wizard in the movie, or perhaps the bucket that held the water she used to melt her (book and movie). A cutting from Jack's beanstalk? Little Red Riding Hood's basket? The white rabbit's pocket watch from Alice in Wonderland?

I love this idea!

Artifacts
What a fun display! I recently saw an object in a local shop. A craftsperson had taken a bottle, filled it with red sequins, and sealed it with wax. The tag said that they were sequins lost by Dorothy along the yellow brick road. I think that they had another bottle of “dream dust” left by the Sand Man.

Re: Artifacts
Too fun! How about a few golden threads for the Goose Girl's hair; a wooden mixing bowl and spoon that Donkeyskin used to bake her cake; a wilted rose from the Beast's garden; a cutting of silk from Sheherezade's wardrobe; a handful of straw from the first piggie's house.

What a great project!

Best,
Alice

Re: Artifacts
This sounds fantastic ... have you read Delia Sherman's The Porcelain Dove? She has a scene which might serve as inspiration ...

I might also suggest the spinning wheel of Sleeping Beauty, a golden egg from the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk", an empty case containing either a cloak of invisibility or the Emperor's new clothes, the three magic nuts from which the heroine of "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" pulls her treasures, the heart of Koschie the Deathless (appropriately concealed, of course) ... the possibilities are endless!

Might I ask, where will this display be located, geographically speaking? I'd love to be able to see it ...

Cookies
Are you going to have refreshments on a story day? You need gingerbread men cookies, of course.

What a great idea! How about the key to Bluebeard's closet, a diamond from the mouth of one of the many girls who are blessed by fairies, shoes constructed by the elves of The Elves and the Shoemaker, three bowls that have been washed of the Bears' porridge, Hansel's chicken bone, the Little Mermaid's knife, Puss in Boots' boots...

Got a little carried away there... of course you don't want to have too many shoes... :p

Re: re:
Or she could have an exhibit just of shoes--Cinderella's slippers (glass or fur!), the tattered dancing shoes of one of the 12 princesses.... Or perhaps even the goblet in which they served the sleeping draught. A gilded goose egg? Thumbelina's bed, made up in a walnut shell with a rose petal blanket?

Shoes
If you can't find a real glass slipper, you might be able to talk a local bridal shop into lending you a vinyl shoe. They're not as popular as they were a couple of years ago, but someone may still have them.

Re: Shoes
There's gotta be a crown too! Cinderella's, Snow White's, the evil witch-queen's, Sleeping Beauty's--doesn't matter whose, but we need a crown! The pea, from the Princess and the Pea. Sleeping Beauty's comforter. I love this idea, I love this topic.

Re: Shoes
The pipe of the Pied Piper, perhaps? The crumbs left of the Gingerbread Man? Snow White's bodice/comb/rotting apple?

Tootles~~If I can't be anything important, would you like to see me do a trick?

...
How about a tunic from the prince who was left with a swan's wing (The Wild Swans/Six Swans)? Add some feathers at the missing sleeve hole, some scorching along the edge from the closeness of the flames as the princess threw the last tunic, some nettle flax in the stitching...

I think Veronica mentioned a Red Riding Hood basket (scanning the post and writing speedily here) - perhaps some withered wild flowers, a little capped jug of wine & small loaves of bread, a dirty paw print on the cloth from where the Wolf lifted the edge to peek inside... I also thought a "get well Grandma" card but that may not be appropriate.

Sounds from your post that you're wanting to keep the display fairly close to the "original" tales (ie not the Disney versions) - consider looking at Zelinksy's illustrations (Rapunzel, Rumplestiltskin). He researched thoroughly before illustrating and the historic and cultural references within the drawings bring a whole new edge to the tale that's fascinating. The kinds of details he added may give you some additional avenues to think about along the lines of your fabulous Rapunzel's shoe idea.

What a wonderful project! Is it being documented somehow? Will there be a website of pics posted we can see? Any chance it will be a travelling display? I'm sure many of us would happily make the effort to see this in person - sounds absorbing and lovely.

Keep us all posted and best of luck!

brilliant
What a brilliant idea!
As for 'glass slippers' and vinyl shoes, those clear plastic shoes have become quite popular again for young girls attending their prom and you can find them in most shoe stores, some even with crystals glued across the clear areas. Might be suitable.
I would suggest a red cape for LLRH, or perhaps a tiny bed made out of a match box and sticks for Thumbelina's bed. You could make something that would represent 'The boe who went out to find out what fear was'-- his fear, like a small black heart or something like that (which, of course, he never found). Hrm....I'm going to be thinking about this all day now.

Make Believe Museum Items Accumulating!

Dear Everyone,

Thank you so much for the wonderful posts in response to my question about items for the Make Believe
Museum. Since my last post I came back to read
14 wonderful responses with many good ideas. From
each post I received inspiration.....thank you all!

Since my last visit to this discussion board I was able
to find a few more items for the show....hard to find
items of rare and notable importance in the world
of make believe!

A recently discovered yellow Brick from you know where will be a real crowd pleaser at the event along with the pair of shorts worn by Brer Rabbit. Also to be displayed will be Rumpelstiltzkin's Straw and One Gold Coin Crafted From Straw (very old indeed!) , Hansel's Shirt - Hand Embroidered with evidence of old Chocolate Stains, the Long Lost Map of Narnia on old parchment, Heidi's Sweater and Edelweiss Necklace.

I am on a quest to find the rare hats of Tweedledum and Tweedledee. I may have to travel to the Neverland Auction site to find something like that.

Best wishes to all and I will keep you all up to date
on items I come up with. These do not necessarily
have to be all from Fairy Tales....fictional children's
book characters all could offer items for this display.

I do have here in my collection priceless artifacts:
an old straw hat once worn by Huck Finn and the
pipe and spectacles owned by Uncle Remus and Little
Miss Muffet's Tuffet. These items could be in another
"wing" of the museum display apart from the Fairy Tale
antiquities.

And may you all live happily ever after!
