Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
Hi, question here... I have read the glowing recommendations for Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. I've read the book, and while it is entrancing in many respects, I found it to be really, really sad. Anyone else have a similar reaction??

Bittersweet, I would say... but I believe the story isn't finished. I second the glowing recommendations, though-- I knew it was a new book, but I constantly felt like I was reading a classic. It *rings*, you know?

Re: Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell
Ah! Interesting thought... a sequel would make sense, and change the feel of the story. And yet... and yet... Mr. Norrell is such an unattractive personality. So closed in. He seems to be the linch-pin for much that goes awry. Is it possible that the "greatest magician left in England" could be so untouched by magic himself?

Re: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
That's one of the things I liked about it--the fact that one of the greatest magicians can still be such a narrow-minded, self-serving little man. It rings true to me, both about the effects of power and the desire for pre-eminence and about the way that interests/profession end up saying very little about the personality.
