Bloody Chamber: Gothic or Fairy Tale?
I am an A Level English Literature student at a college in Essex, England. I am studying Angela Carter’s “The Bloody Chamber” as my coursework text, and am having great trouble finding any useful critical material in relation to my chosen question:

“Is Angela Carter’s “The Bloody Chamber “more fairytale than gothic?”

It would be greatly appreciated if you could inform me of any critics whom have written an essay relating to my set question; in which I could use there opinion in my coursework to formulate an argument. If the critic’s opinion is an extremist’s view, the more the better, because it entitles me to argue my conflicting, or concurrent point.

Re: Bloody Chamber: Gothic or Fairy Tale?
I might be recalling incorrectly, but I think Salman Rushdie wrote a critique of this work. I believe they were acquainted, and that he also wrote an introduction to a reprint of this book after Angela Carter died. Sorry I can't be more specific.
On a side note, though I am no critic, I think choosing between Gothic and fairy tale would be nearly impossible because these stories are so indebtted to both forms... good luck with your work.

Re: Bloody Chamber: Gothic or Fairy Tale?
You might want to take a look at Angela Carter and the Fairy Tale, edited by Danielle M. Roemer and Cristina Bacchilega, which was a Special Issue of the "Marvels & Tales" journal of Fairy Tale studies. It's full of good articles on Carter's use of fairy tale material. You can order it from Amazon.com, which will ship to the U.K.
