Wendy Froud Workshop Article
For those of you fortunate enough to attend the Mythic Journeys Conference last Spring in Atlanta, GA, you may recall that Wendy and Brian Froud gave a mask making workshop. I have written a review of their workshop, just recently published in the March/April 2005 issue of Belle Armoire magazine. A link to a preview of the magazine can be found here:

I also have an online portfolio of my own mythic dolls, and would welcome feedback from you good folks! It can be found here:

Re: Wendy Froud Workshop Article
Thanks Black Sheep!

Since I regard her as the embodiment of the spirit of transformation, who, through the act of storytelling, transforms her listeners, I thought what better way to portray the Fairy Godmother than to dress her in that very object most famously enchanted by her. The pumpkin! It is my own interpretation of the story, and maybe a leap, but as she is generally seen as an older woman, the Fairy Godmother struck me as being in the same tradition of elderly storytellers such as the nursemaids and wise women discussed by Marina Warner in From the Beast to the Blonde.

If you ever get to Kennesaw, GA, you can find her in the Duirwaigh Gallery Doll Museum!

Re: Wendy Froud Workshop Article
You seem, from the gallery, to have been going through a garden vegetable phase in your art? My vegetable love would grow vaster than empires and more slow... :)

I enjoyed your FG's whimsical (and now you've explained also symbolic) unsquashed squash skirt but it was her face which impressed me most. I tend to think of FGs as strong, powerful, perhaps even slightly overbearing, women but the vulnerability and (dare I say?) air of dottiness you modelled in her face is perfect... different to my own expectations but equally true to the FG characters.

I enjoyed having my imagination's parameters extended. Ta.

Actually the Garden Variety Goblins are what craftspeople often refer to as the "coffee cup" item - production work in a series. My Fairy Folk and Elves of Rushy Glen also fit this description.

Did you get a chance to see my Edgar Allan Crow? He's my personal favorite. I hope that one day I can concentrate my efforts just on the big guys, and leave off with the production work.

art dolls

Chandra, your dolls are absolutely wonderful ! They make me want to go off and write stories, as well as being very beautiful in themselves. My favourites are Edgar Allan Crow, Marzipan Man and Dolly-Lama, but I like them all.

Are any of them for sale ? Is there a book that depicts them and gives you a chance to showcase more of your work ?

thank you for posting

Re: art dolls
Rosyelf, thank you so much for your positive feedback! Since I am generally squirrelled away in my studio, often the only time I get a response to my work is at craft shows or gallery openings. I really appreciate the encouragement!

They are for sell - as I said, at juried craft shows. My work can also be found at the Southern Highland galleries like the Folk Art Center (Ashville, NC) and the Parkway Craft Center (Blowing Rock, NC), or through my website. I will be showing this year at DragonCon, in Atlanta, GA, if that is something that you might attend. It would be great to say hello!

I would love to have my guys in a book, but so far they have only appeared in magazines. Edgar is currently featured in the May 2005 issue of Contemporary Doll Collector magazine, in their gallery section.

Thanks Again!

Chandra, I would love to come to Atlanta, GA and meet you and your creations-but I live in England ! A long way, methinks, I don't think I'll be able to travel so far, this year at least-family commitments, etc.-I just can't really take the necessary time. Sigh.

But I'm going back to your website, and have made a note of the magazine.

thank you very much

I hope you carry on getting lots pf positive feedback-you really do deserve it !

Re: dolls
Hey Rosyelf,

If there is a piece that you are interested, email me privately, and I will give you a price and availability. I have PayPal, which is how this particular bit of business is accomplished.

How lovely that you live in England, though! I was born in Bentwaters, Suffolk, and would love to come back and visit!
