Re: Independant Study....
What you want to get hold of...if you can is Marina Warner's book called 'FROM THE BEAST TO THE BLONDE' part of my dissertation is looking at a similar thing and this book was great and more importanly , easy to understand. It is big but there are two chapters that were very useful that is, 'absent mothers' and 'wicked stepmothers'. She is full of points and ideas that you could develop.
You may wish to consider the viewpoint that many of these tales were originally told by women (written down by men) about women, and see where that takes you. It would look great on your bibliography.

Hope this helps.

Re: Independant Study....
Also, look at the Fairytale collections of Jane Yolen. She's done at least one, if not more, collections that are focussed on women and the role of women. She's tried to find some that aren't so damselly, but seeing the more empowered roles will also help you discuss the ones that are less so.
