Milagre ex voto

I am looking for information on the Brazilian milagre ex-voto, those wonderful sculptures that pilgrims make of an injured body part they hope to cure. Carved of wood, each shows the particular affliction that prompted the pilgrimage - a wounded hand, recovery from breast surgery, a twisted ankle.

I have a nice collection of photographs, but I would love more backround information on the custom.
