Need some help in Montreal
Hey guys, I don't know if you can help me out - but if anyone is doing some research on folktales and lives in the montreal area - I just finished writing a piece for violin and ensemble inspired by an old folktale, then further inspired by a reading of a Louis Frechette story. The story is that the day before Ash Wednesday, the Quebecois would have a party to celebrate (since no partying was allowed during carnival season). In this story, the devil enchants a young lad's (Fifi Labranche) violin so that his playing at the party is so electrifying, so exciting, that the others party right into the morning of Ash Wendesday and thus, the devil wins, burning them up.

If you have heard of this story, tell me, where can I find the original edition? The performance is very soon.

You might need to search French sources for the story. Anything in English would likely be a translation.

It reminds me of "The Flying Canoe" which was made into an animated short. www.nfb.ca/trouverunfilm/...0${canoe}#

That story was written by Honoré Beaugrand. Researching his name could help you find the story you're looking for.
