Fairy Tales and Urban Legends
First, what is the difference between a fairy tale and an urban legend? Second, how can you tell them apart?

Re: Fairy Tales and Urban Legends
"Fairy tales" (tales of wonder) are traditional stories intended as fiction.

Urban legends are fictions created through mistaken beliefs.

A fairy tale is intended as fiction, whereas an urban legend is intended as truth. (Then there's the obvious aspect that most fairy tales take place in rural, not urban, areas.)

Re: Fairy Tales and Urban Legends
What I find interesting is that most urban legends take place in rural areas as well--teenagers making out in cars in the woods, drivers picking up hitchhikers on lonely stretches of road. Not so many urban urban legends!

If you're looking at urban legends, I recommend www.snopes.com. It's exhaustive and fascinating!
