Oz/Wonderland comic book
I know this isn't technically directly on-topic, but I just found yet another cool comic book. This one is called The Oz/Wonderland Chronicles, and it's quite lovely. Don't be fooled by the cover, which is creepy cheesecake. The set-up is that The Wicked Witch of the West (resurrected? we don't yet know) has taken over Oz, imprisoned Ozma, and is in cahoots with Ruggedo the Nome King. Ruggedo goes to Wonderland and brings the Jabberwocky to life. The Oz resistance turns up at an apartment being shared by a few college girls, who include Alice and Dorothy (obviously not Alice Liddell, more like, if the fictional Alice and Dorothy had been real girls who had been born twenty years ago, here they are), who need them to come back and save the day.

The comics are clearly written and drawn by people who know and love Carroll, Baum, Tenniel, O'Neill, and Denslow. There is Oz lore in the very first issue that shows that they've read the work well, including the magic wishing belt, Jack Pumpkinhead, and Ruggedo. The illustrations are great: except for the creepy cover, the art is simply beautiful, and the illustrator goes out of his way to echo O'Neill and Tenniel. Jack Pumpkinhead and Ruggedo look as they do in the Oz books, and other familiar figures, such as the WW of the W combine the most memorable images of the movie and the book (i.e., she has green skin, but she also has an eye patch).

I suspect, based on a few hints dropped in this first issue, that one of Dorothy and Alice's other roommates is going to turn out to be Wendy Darling, which is also cool.

Check it out.

oz/wonderland comic
I just found it at my local comic book store--I'm lucky enough to live down the block from one. If you can get to a comics shop, try there. It's worth the trip.

Re: oz/wonderland comic
I've just decided that one of the other roommates is Pollyanna. There's one last one, named Susie. I'm not sure who she's supposed to be.

Yet.

Susie...
I was just wondering if Susan from Narnia would turn up!

Re: Susie...
Ah. That would explain why I couldn't place her. I was never a big fan of Narnia, but of course that's who it is! Thanks, Rosemary.

Re: Susie...
Veronica, who are the writers and artists? I may have to coax DH into nabbing this one for me....

Re: Susie...
It's written by Ben Avery and drawn/colored by Casey Heying. And it's published by Buy Me Toys.Com. Which sounds odd, but I only type what I see in front of me...

Susie and...
So has Susie been out shopping for lipstick and nylons, with her friend Lyra?

Re: Susie and...
Heh. Those are all of the roommates. Lyra, I expect, is still under copyright. Here's Susie's character description:

"Susie has long forgotten her fantasy land, allowing the realities of everyday life to crowd out the fantasies of her past. Now she puts childish things aside, empracing the stark realities of adulthood."

But Narnia is under copyright too. Still if you thought it was out, maybe the comic book author did too. If a nickname would have done it, he might have done Lyra too. Or maybe she'll turn up as a non-roommate. I could never quite believe her settling down to girl-talk at Oxford later anyway. (Haven't read LYRA'S OXFORD.)
