Searching for a children's book...can you help?
I am searching for the name of a children's book about a little girl named Eve who saw goblins in the shadows of her home. I recall they were rather mischevious, but I can't remember anything else.

I posted this a few weeks ago, but received no response, so I thought I would try again as there seems to be some new people about.

Thanks :)

Re: Searching for a children's book...can you help?
I'm afraid that doesn't ring any bells for me.

However, I don't think this is really the best forum to post this in, since your book doesn't sound much to me like a fairy tale, and the forum doesn't have very many people coming through here (as far as I can tell). I would suggest something like Abebooks' Booksleuth (in the "Children's" section), which is specifically designed to find titles or authors based on plot bits. The people there are impressively good at that sort of thing.

If you do decide to post your query there, I'd recommend using something descriptive in the title ("girl sees goblins in shadows" rather than "looking for a book") because that's more likely to catch someone's eye and get you an answer.

Polly Flint?
I asked about this on a Usenet forum, rec.arts.books.childrens, which does a lot of identifying. Someone suggested "The Secret World of Polly Flint", saying she sees these in the shadows and mist outside her bedroom window.

Thanks
Thank you both for your suggestions. I have posted this over on the Abebooks forum, but no luck yet. I will check into the Polly Flint book, though I was fairly certain her name was Eve. But this was probably 16 years ago, and who knows what tricks the memory has played since then!

Thanks again!

book
I checked out The Secret World of Polly Flint, and unfortunately, that wasn't it. This was definitely a children's picture book.

Oh well! Perhaps I'll have some luck over at Booksleuth!

Thanks again!

Re: book
The Hobbyahs? (probably not the correct spelling)

Didn't this children's book have an Eve and her brother battling abduction by the mole-like epoymous monsters, who would put their victims into a sack, and then taunt them be peeking into the bag saying "Look me, look me, look me"? I believe the ending had a cat or another animal friend hiding in the bag after an escape and eating the purple creatures?

Oh no... I have to find that story now...

Re: book
Lamplighter,

I put hobyahs in the search box on amazon.com, and it came up with 3 results, and each result is a story that fits what you described. So, hope that saves you some search time!

Story girl, I have a feeling the hobyahs book isn't what you are looking for though, I read the descriptions on amazon, and 2 of the versions just call the girl the little girl, and the final version calls her Lucy.

If you find the name of the Eve story on Booksleuth, please let us know. I've been doing some digging to try to help find it, and now i'm really curious to know the name of the story, and I've never even read it before!

thanks
Thank you all for digging. I've been searching for this book for years, as it always kind-of haunted me as a kid. Still nothing from booksleuth, but I might bump it and see if that gets me anywhere. I will definitely let you know if I find it :)

hobbyyahs
I originally read the story of the hobbyyahs which was the the Arthur Mee Childrens Encyclopedia but that was about 50 years ago. I have terrified my children with the story and and now working on the grand kids. The sstory was about these little black beasties who lived on a mountain ans would come down at night to eat people

Re: Searching for a children's book...can you help?
A web search keeps bringing up "Goblin Market" and "The Princess and the Goblin" but I don't think it's either of those.

no luck
Well, it seems I'm the only one who remembers! I've had no luck on Booksleuth, so I'm going to try Stump the Bookseller over at Loganberry books. It's definitely not the Princess and the Goblin or Goblin Market....*sigh*. Perhaps one of these days...

thanks to all for trying!!!:D

Re: no luck
It's not unusual for some books to be forgotten. Many book have small press runs (such as only 5000 books), so it's possible for a book not to be known. Also, you didn't mention which country. Some books are only published on one country and not in others. While US books are often international, a book printed in Canada or UK may only have been seen by those in those countries.
