fairy tales v. fables
I'm looking for a resource to help me articulate define the difference between fairy tales and fables (Aesop's, in particular). Seems that fables have a specific "moral," while fairy tales don't. Thank you.

youre on the right track. I would start with the OED definitions, or the dictionary of y our choice. Just my two cents' worth, but I think it's important/ useful to remember that there are many systems regarding the totting up/classifying and defining of fairytales, myths, legends, fables, modern urban legends stories, milagroso stories, et al... the sytems used by curanderas are by application to an ill and may nnot be in agreement with one another; the sytems used by anthropologists may or may not be in agreement with one another; the systems used by storytellers may or may not follow regimented systems; the systems used by mythologists and psychoanalysts may differ as well. Quote your source and if you can, the tradition they come from, if you are a student. If in another profession, follow those guidelines. If a trailblazer, surprise us all

I love what Max Luthi said about fairy tales (maarchen) vs local legends. He must have mentioned fables too.
