Re: Re:Writing
Grace--a lot of advice you have been given above is contradictory. But the one important thing to know is that you do NOT have to copyright your own work. As pointed out:

1. it brands you as an amateur at once
2. it makes it difficult to publish as a new work if it carries, say, a 2005 copyright and you finally sell it in 2008
3. can be expensive

Just find a good book on copyright, or a solid article, and read it with care. Magazines and book publishers copyright the story for you. At least GOOD magazines and publishers (ie not scams) do.

sounds cool
wow, i would totally read this. what an interesting plot. I myself am trying to be a writer, and have come up with nothing nearly as interesting as that! and i love the idea of the luaghter being a metaphor for society. That's so cool.
And another cool thing is using poetry to cover up the... ah... part that you don't wish to write. I love writing poetry too, especially the dark stuff.
Overall, I ENVY YOUR IDEA, and if you manage to geet it published, i will *totally* read it.
Cheers!

Thank You
Dear Jane Yolen,
Thank you so much for your advice! I have read your work and deeply appreciate the input, as I look up to you as a writer and reader. I am going to attend my state's Writer's Conference in March where I hope to find an agent. Because I attend an arts school, they will cover all expenses, and I hope to get published as soon as possible. I thank you again for your advice, and for inspiring me as a writer. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Grace

Re: Re:Writing
I wanted to comment that in a media law class I took in college we studied copy right. In the United States it is legal to mail yourself a copy of your work to prove copyright. To legally do this you must take your work to a post office in an envelope and have the mail clerk date stamp the seal of the envelope (make sure you have a receipt to prove you purchased the postage) and then mail it to yourself. Once you receive it you must not open it but keep it with the receipt. Only if you need to prove you were the original author in court would you open.

Re: Re:Writing
The postoffice copyright system is a myth. It is legal, but it doesn't do any good (and it can be fooled). Copyright today is automatic, so there's no need to go through this process to copyright the work.

But in order to be able to sue someone for copyright infringement or protect yourself against it, you must have it registered with the copyright office. The courts don't bother with it otherwise, even though the work is copyrighted.
