French Fairy tales
Hey all. I'm new. *waves* I'm also supposed to be doing school right now, but I have to say that I am so glad I found this page!! See, I'm having a bloody hard time finding French fairy tales. That's bad, because I'm doing a research report on them. I've hardly found anything, and what I have found is mostly renditions of classic tales that everyone knows anyway (Beauty and the Beast, for example.) I've found a few that at least seem to be originals, but not enough to do a five page paper on. Can anyone help me?

Re: French Fairy tales
I always thought that Perrault was French.

yep
Perrault basically rewrote most of todays familiar stories...and is the most well known french fairy tale writer. Just look him up on this website or run a google search even.

French Fairytales
If you're looking for someone a bit less mainstream than Perrault, you might try Marie Catherine d'Aulnoy, who was a contemporary of Perrault's, and who wrote quite a number of fairy-tales for her salons. There's a page on her on Surlalune here with a lot of her stories.

Her life was pretty interesting, too, if you have time to look into that.

What?
You can't find French fairy tales?!? A lot of the best and most famous fairy tales are French, mostly by Charles Perrault. Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, Donkeyskin, and Bluebeard, to name a few. Good luck with the paper! :)

French Fairy Tales
If you'd like a broad selection of tales, especially ones which are not commonly known, you might want to pick up a copy of Jack Zipes Beauty and the Beast and Other Classic French Fairy Tales: it contains an excellent selection of tales from both "well-known" authors such as Perrault as well as lesser-known writers such as Mlle. de Lubert.* Good luck!

* Look for the hardcover if possible, as I believe that the paperback contains an abbreviated selection.
