Help with violent childhood fairy story
Please help with identifying this violent child fairy story, it has been popping into my dreams of late (some 25+ years later) so it must have had a great effect. The tale involves red (?) globlin type creatures constantly terrorizing an old man and woman who live in a cabin in the middle of the woods. They come out at night and at some point in the tale the old couple have to sacrifice their dog, by cutting him up and placing him in a bag (all body parts moving if I remember right) to stop the onslaught of these evil creatures. I am sure there is no happy ending, and I think the old lady gets killed. The book I had as a child was very old and was written in some parts in verse (when the creatures come to attack). The creatures also had a special name which was important to the verse, but I can't remember what. Some-one out there please help so these nightmares can stop!!!!

Thanks

Mark

violent tale
The story you are describing sounds like the "Hobyahs" but I'm not sure the time frame is right for that. Amazon is selling a copy that was published in 1994 by Robert San Souci.

Re: Help with violent childhood fairy story
Thanks very much dlee10 - this is indeed the story, but in a hugely diluted form. The original tale I read as a kid was very scary, bloody and dark. Does anybody know where I can get a version of the original story in an unabridged version. Searching on the internet seems to show a version published in the 50s and then one in the 60s that look to be hopeful but no more details than that.

Thanks

Mark
