The really stories of the tales
My teacher has given an essay out to write about the original fairy tales. I am not talking about the Grimm or any of those. She had told us that the original stories held a lesson. Cinderella was really about a poor family with the whole step-sister and mother thing, but that they lived in the middle of the woods. A man who lived in the woods had raped her letting her loose her "Shoe".

There were others aswell, but i was wondering if anyone has heard about this and if anyone knows where i can find the story and any imformation on the author. Thank you very much!!

Re: The really stories of the tales
hello there: I would look into work by Jack Zipes who tells for instance of the weavers' wars between the old hand weavers and the newer more mechanical loom weavers that he finds in the motifs in the fairytale Rumpelstiltskin... about the maiden forced to spin straw into gold. He is interested, amongst other things, in the social conditions that appear to feed and swirl around various renditions of fairytales in various eras.

In my two cent's worth opinion, no one can say definitively what the original underlying event, if any, was, underlying or provoking any fairytale. The tales are ancient, far older than the written word, and as ancient as the soul. The motifs arise in night dreams, not just in conscious thought and creativity. The process of the eruption of stories is a phenomena, to my way of seeing, that is mysterious and simply will not behave inside guidelines; story is more like fire, it leaps and jumps and no fireline can hold it; it transforms and takes on the color of those whose hearts it passes through.

Let us know what you find out.
and good luck.
with kindest regards,
cpe

original tales
It looks like your teacher has read some of the pop psycoanalistic fairytale stuff thats around, which is fine if that ties in with the subject area your studying, however, either ways I would suggest that you look into the socio-historic aspect of fairy tales. What might offer an interesting insight to your essay, but without being to presumptuous (as I suspect your teacher may have been about the possible 'meaning' of tails) is Jack Zipes 'the Trials and Tribulations of Little Red Riding Hood'. As the previous comment suggested, when your reading a fairytale it is benifical to acknowledge the culture and time period from which that particular tale came. If its marks your looking for rather than the moral high ground then I would imagine your teacher will reward you for including work by Bruno Bettleheim 'the uses of enchantment'. Its very psycoanalytic but if your looking for solid evidence its not the place to find it Im afraid. Hope this helps and hasn't been too opinionated! Good Luck with your assignement and please excuse the spelling errors!
