choctaw folklore
What does it mean to a Choctaw for an owl to be sitting in their driveway, also for two owls to be seen sitting together in the yard around 8:30 in the evening?

Re: choctaw folklore
Owls are considered birds of ill omen. It's a bad thing for owls to gather around someone's house. The hooting of an owl nearby foretells death, either for a child in the family or a near relative, depending on the type of owl. It's rather like the banshee in that respect. I don't know of any specific meaning of two owls together, or a specific time.

Richard thank you for commenting, another question for you if you don't mind, my boyfriend is choctaw and is living with me; the owls were located at my house and I am not native american so does that mean I'm the one in danger or is he? It really up set him to see this and I would really like to understand if I could, Is there anthing that can be done? Do you think it could be a sign regarding our relationship when speaking of death or is it an actual physical death?

Re: choctaw folklore
As a Choctaw your boyfriend is certainly better qualified to assess their meaning in a current cultural context than I am; all I can do is relate some of the folklore as I understand it. If the birds are still considered omens of death, that would be on a physical, not symbolic, level. In your boyfriend's case, he may be worried about you or someone in his immediate family. He may be uncertain himself what he should do. I think your best bet would be to talk to him about it. Good luck.

Hey thank you Patrick,
That makes me feel a lot better because I got home yesterday evening and again 8:30 they were back, 2 black owls; after talking with different ones yesterday I was beginning to feel sick at my stomach, but you know what after reading your thought I'm beginning to think I have a lot of mice to........
