Beauty and the Beast Thesis
I'm looking to explore the evolution of Beauty and the Beast Im trying to narrow my thesis a bit. I'm looking at McKinley's Beauty and Rose daughter and Napoli's Beast. I'd like to stay in the realm of young adult lit but im not married to it yet. I've read Herne's book and from the beast to the blond.

Re: Beauty and the Beast Thesis
What is your broad thesis idea? Maybe we could help you work from there.

Were there any parts of the novels you mentioned, or of Hearne's Beauty and the Beast: Visions and Revisions of an Old Tale or Warner's From the Beast to the Blonde that you found especially interesting or provocative?

Things that interested me were the cultural and societal implications of the evolution of the tale, and the character of Beauty. Her intelligence, her strength ect. I love the tale and had always planned on pursuing it for my thesis, however my research has been a little disappointing. I don’t want to rehash old research and Herne’s book and Griswold’s, The Meanings of "Beauty & The Beast" A Handbook are pretty comprehensive. I do think it noteworthy that Beauty by McKinley hardly gets a mention other than, it's a very good version, but there is little or no elaboration on the novel. I also find it fascinating that McKinley found enough within the tale to write not one full novel but two, each one drastically different than the other.

Windling's Beauty and Beast
You might find Terri Windling's article on Beauty and the Beast interesting. She has a short but useful bibliography.

Beauty and Beast
It's also useful to look at Beauty and the Beast in the historical context of other Animal Bridegroom tales. Here's an online article that might be of use: "Married to Magic," www.endicott-studio.com/rdrm/rrMarriedToMagic.html.

Have you read Donna Jo Napoli's Beauty and the Beast novel, Beast?

Re: Beauty and the Beast Thesis
I've been mulling over the idea of focusing on Beauty's actions choices and freedoms in various retellings of the tale. I’d be looking at the idea of what choices she made because she wanted to and what choices she made because society and cultural values dictated she do so. I’d also be evaluating how successful the version was capturing the essential elements of the tale.

Should I look at other varients like east of the sun west of the moon or simply stick to classic Beauty and the beast?

Re: Beauty and the Beast Thesis
There are a great many versions of East of the Sun. If you wanted to widen your subject without going that far, you might look at 'The Wonderful Sheep,' d'Aulnoy, Blue Fairy Book, which iirc was very similar to Beaumont's Beauty and the Beast except that the bride returned too late to save the sheep.

Thank you, that was a helpful article. any opinions as to whether adding other animal groom stories to my research will make my topic too broad? I've looked at several differen east of the sun versions as well as a few others but i'm wondering if thats too much.

Beauty & Beast
Francesca Lia Block"s short story "Beast," from her story collection "The Rose and the Beast" is an interesting take on the Beast story. Beauty's relationship to Beast doesn't evolve in quite the usual way, so if you're interested in Beauty's psychology, you might find this one intriguing.

Good luck!
