Arabian Nights editions
Hi, everyone --

I need a good readable (accessible) edition of the Arabian Nights. I'd like to avoid the Burton translation and I'm not sure where to start. Suggestions?

Thanks much,
Elizabeth

The Arabian Nights by Husain Haddawy (also in paperback for $4 less) is considered one of the best and is the one I keep on my shelf.

I second that recommendation. The introduction is very informative on the history (and famous forgeries) as well as translation issues.

Also Haddawy's translation preserve the cultural emphasis of the stories rather than rerouting them to European attitudes.
