The Tales of Baba Yaga

By Any Other Name An Overview of the Russian Fairy Tale in the Fantastic Traditions of the East and West by Helen Pilinovsky

Russian Fairy Tales, Part II: Baba Yaga's Domain by Helen Pilinovsky

The Baba Yaga tale presented on this site is classified as AT-313H*: The Girl Escapes from a Witch. This tale type does not have any other tales translated into English to my knowledge. However, it is closely related to two other tales already presented on SurLaLune, AT-327A: Hansel and Gretel and the ever popular AT-510A: Cinderella.

Since this section of SurLaLune is primarily devoted to the Baba Yaga character, and not a specific tale, this section presents tales in which Baba Yaga appears, regardless of tale type classification. Andreas Johns' Baba Yaga: The Ambiguous Mother and Witch of the Russian Folktale was an invaluable resource. His book also offers a significantly longer list of Baba Yaga tales in other languages, many not readily available in English translation, which are outside the scope of this site.
