Three Billy Goats Gruff: Folktales of Aarne-Thompson type 122E
by D. L. Ashliman

The story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff comes from Norway where it was collected and recorded in its most familiar version by Peter Christen Asbjornsen and Jorgen Moe in 1845. While similar stories have been found in other cultures, the well-known story appears to be Scandinavian in origin. The tale is one of the popular tales, along with East of the Sun and West of the Moon, to come from Asbjornsen and Moe's collection. The difference in landscape in these tales from that found in the Grimms' tales reflects the geographical difference between the two countries.
