Re: thinking ....
Laura, congratulations!

Concerning Wiscon, here's what I suggest: write to the Wiscon committee (there must be an address on their website), explain your circumstances, tell them that Midori, Greg and I have been urging you to attend, and ask if it's possible to waive or reduce the fee (or perhaps to work it off by volunteering to help with something?) The people who run this convention are all extremely nice, and it never hurts to ask.

And if you make it up to Madison, let me buy you a drink to celebrate your exceptance!

Kudos!
CONGRATULATIONS!!! I think that Jane Hawkins is the person in charge of managing the generalities at WisCon - a very, very nice lady. Like Terri said, no harm in trying, right? I hope this works out; WisCon strikes me (at least from what I've heard on the board) as being a the more, the merrier type of event, and it'll be a great place to celebrate.

Best,
Helen

Congrats!
Congratulations Laura on Indiana...and I do hope you make it to WisCon so we can properly toast you.

My father taught for many years at Bloomington...it's a wonderful campus and what great resources for someone in folklore!

Yippee, another Hoosier!
Laura,

As a brand new Hoosier myself, let me say welcome! Congratulations on your acceptance to IU! It's a beautiful campus and Bloomington is a lovely city. I'm not, as Jess said, actually an IU student (though it was nice of her to think of me!). I'll actually be going to IUPUI (IU-Purdue) in downtown Indianapolis, starting this July. I live just North of Indianapolis so about an hour and a half away from Bloomington. I would love to help in any way I can, you seem to have a lot on your plate!
all the best,
Alina

overwhelmed
Thanks Terri! I took your advice and wrote to the committee –- we'll see from there -– and your offer is incredibly kind. You and Midori and everyone have made me feel so welcome. I'll do my very best to make it work.

Do you guys know if there's any chance of getting a copy of your new Green Man anthology before the conference? I know it's due out in May, but I wasn't sure when.

And thank you too, Alina –- I may well call in that favor closer to time! I'd like to get to Bloomington and reconnoiter in May, then get moved up there in August. If you can think of any suggestions, especially as relates to housing, feel free to pass them along –- otherwise I'll write again when I have concrete questions.

You guys are great!

party
I was reading the WisCon update file and I saw this:

HOW CAN I GET A PARLOR FOR MY PARTY?

It’s not too early to sign up for one of the free party parlors on the sixth floor. WisCon assigns them to groups and individuals that want to throw parties open to all attendees of the convention. It’s a great deal. You get the use of a large parlor for one night (Friday, Saturday or Sunday) on the “Party Floor,” at no cost to yourself or your group. Check off the Party box on your registration form and let us know which night would be best for you!

Has anyone given any thought to a SurLaLune/Endicott Studios party?

Re: party
Hadn't thought of it, Laura, but it's a good idea.
Terri, any chance of our doing that? There are enough of us going that hosting it should be pretty unstressful.

Re: party
A party? Hmmm. I dunno. Here are my thoughts...

1.) Hosting a party means you provide the wine and beer, and I'm stretched financially just getting myself to Madison. Are there enough of us to pass the hat without it being a burden on anyone?

2. I find the typical convention party pretty boring: a lot of people crowded into a room talking loudly at each other. If the "Endicott Studio" name was attached to it, I'd want to find a way to make it a more interesting environment than that. Any ideas?

3. Kelly Link and Gavin Grant promise dancing at the Small Beer Press party, so I wouldn't want to be scheduled the same time as them -- I intend to be there with my dancing shoes on!

oooooh ....
Very good points, Terri. I hadn't thought about those. Besides, it's ever so likely we'll all bump into one another anyway.

Yup, I said we. You guys were so right -- the WisCon people are the nicest! It's looking more and more likely all the time that I'll be coming after all. :-) I'll let you know when I'm sure.

Re: oooooh ....
It turns out that Sharyn November, editor of Viking's new Firebird line, might be interested in throwing a joint Firebird/Endicott Studio/Surlalune party. If that's the case, the beer and wine cost comes way down (though I'd still have to pass the hat to contribute *something*. Do people want to do this? Should I pursie this with her? And if so, any thoughts on my second question?

Party
Terri,

I'm interested in helping out, though my wallet is thin (is that even a saying). Like you, I would prefer it not to conflict with the Sm. Br. Press party--though I have not yet been invited (I haven't let them know I'm attending yet! But we've been corresponding on various matters for some months, including a reading at Powell's I helped to arrange . . . so . . .).

I think I will be coming Friday and leaving Sunday, so sometime between those dates would be, well, better for me.

Off to teach my night seminar. Will this day never end?!

hmmm...party ideas
        Terri and all,

I'd be more than happy to contribute ($) to whatever happens.

        However...

Most parties are way too loud, then I can't hear what's being said, then I get bored, then I leave...

This is WisCon though and it IS more subdued than other conventions.

Maybe if the lights were slightly dimmed and Carlos Nikai were playing softly in the room it might become an event for language rather than just more "party hearty-ness". More like a dinner party at Endicott West than a typical con suite fest.

Also...We'd have to replace the most probably god-awful paintings on the wall and hang a few subdued textiles around... more sitting/relaxing/speaking space than standing and drinking area...

        Maybe burn a little sage...

        It might be fun.

Sharyn's presence would certainly make it interesting that's for sure.

        Charles

Re: hmmm...party ideas
If Gavin and Kelly are throwing a bash, that would be the party I recommend. Those two just do it right... and then we don't have to.

party-stress
O.K. I'm being selfish--but I will be arriving at WisCon with final exams bulging out of my bag to be graded and turned in by Monday--so I want to go to a party, but I don't want to plan one! or host one--just be a cheerful addition to one, bring flowers chocolate...and just be really happy to be there.

But maybe that's something we could talk about for next year---and plan ahead a little...

Re: party-stress
Why don't we just plan a dinner out together then, for all of us Surlalune and Endicott folks who are doing the "Transgressive Characters in Fairy Tales panel (maybe Friday night? then we can discuss the panel in advance), leave the party hosting this year to others, and perhaps do a SurlanLune/Endicott party another year when Heidi is there.

wiscon, etc.
Hi all,

I'm a little late in adding to this thread, but I will also be attending Wiscon, hosting the Small Press, POD and Self-Publishing living room with several other good folk and generally hanging out and meeting people. I've never been to Wiscon before and I am greatly looking forward to it. Now, if I can just get a room for wednesday night (the other nights I am sharing with someone who had the foresight to register early, thank goodness) I'll be doing all right.

Re: wiscon, etc.
I've been trying to arrange my schedule to accommodate coming to Wiscon this year, but it isn't going to happen. My sister is getting married and the wedding is dominating most of my May.

I hope everyone has a wonderful time! Since this is the last wedding of a sibling, I should be fine next year!

Report back
WisCon sounds like so much fun...
I'd love it if everyone who goes made a con report here.
