Storytime Guidelines

Storytime is intended to foster the love of language and literature. Children listen to, observe and imitate the books and activities we share, thus building reading readiness as they grow. SurLaLune strives for positive interaction between parents, children and books. The most important connection between literacy and the child is a caring adult who will actively participate with children exploring the world of language.

Some Guidelines to Get the Most Benefit From Storytime

  • Parent participation is the key to any storytime's success. You are best equipped to help your child focus during storytime. Please join in the activities and show your child it's fun!
  • You set the example for your child. If you do not listen quietly during the activities, the children will not sit quietly either. There will be plenty of time to socialize once storytime is over.
  • Please put toys and food away. They distract your child and other children.
  • If your child is crying loudly or otherwise distracting the group, please feel free to step out and regroup. One crying child can spoil the storytime for the entire group.
  • Your child is not expected to sit still and participate in every activity. Storytime is varied with books, finger plays, flannelboard stories, etc. to help each child participate, but individual responses vary.
  • Storytime doesn't end when you go home! Share the activities you've learned throughout the day and/or at bedtime. This site offers lists of additional books, songs and other activities for you to use at home.
